How to get TikTok data

Three routes work in 2026: the official APIs, building it yourself, or a managed API. This guide covers all three, then gives you a first call to copy.

There are three ways to get TikTok data, and they fit different people. Route one is the official APIs. Route two is building the scraper yourself. Route three is paying a managed API to do it for you. This guide covers all three honestly, then gives you a first call to copy.

Route one, official. The Research API is free in dollars, but it is for approved non-commercial academics only, commercial users are explicitly not accepted, approval takes weeks to months, and you are capped at 1,000 requests a day. The Display API only returns your own account. The Content Posting API posts videos, it does not read public data. If you are researching for a paper and you can wait, apply to the Research API. If you are building a product, route one is a dead end.

Route two, do it yourself. You write the scraper, you run the proxies, you fix it every time TikTok changes something. You own the code, and you also own the blocks, the maintenance, the proxy bills, and the legal grey area: TikTok's terms prohibit automated extraction without written approval, and the rules differ by country. Fine for a weekend project, rough for a product that has to work every day.

Route three, a managed API. You pay per call and someone else keeps the scrapers alive. That is what this page is, and what the TikTok API alternative roundup compares. My honest take: if you are building a product, do not build the scraper yourself, buy the data. The rest of this page is route three, with a call you can copy.

The call

One API key works for every endpoint below. Send your key in the x-api-key header.

curl -X POST https://social-data-api.chideraezeudu2.workers.dev/v1/tiktok/profile \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"uniqueId": "example_creator"}'

Profile takes uniqueId (username, without @) or secUid. One call costs 1 credit and returns the profile: followers, following, likes, video count, verified flag and bio. From there, videos gives you the creator's videos, search finds videos by keyword, and comments reads the discussion under a video.

What you get back

{
  "platform": "tiktok",
  "endpoint": "tiktok.profile",
  "credits_used": 1,
  "upstream_cost_usd_per_call": 0.001,
  "key_id": "...",
  "plan_type": "trial",
  "result": { "...": "upstream profile data" }
}

Response shape, example values only, not real data. Every response uses this wrapper. The result field holds the upstream provider's data, in its own shape. credits_used tells you what the call cost.

What it costs

  • Pay as you go: $0.003 a call, $3.00 per 1,000 calls, top up from $10.
  • Basic $29/mo: 10,000 calls included, $2.90 per 1,000 calls.
  • What $29 buys: 10,000 profile lookups, or 200,000 videos at 20 per call, or 200,000 comments at 20 per call.
  • Free trial: 3 days, 100 calls on TikTok, card required, $29/mo after trial unless you cancel.

If you go route three, start with the profile endpoint above, then pull the creator's videos, then search for the topic, then read the comments. That order answers most questions: who is this, what do they post, what is everyone talking about, and what do people think of it.

How it works

  1. Get one API key from the Social Data API dashboard. The same key works for TikTok, X, Instagram and Reddit.
  2. Send the call above with your key in the x-api-key header.
  3. Use the JSON. List endpoints take count (default 20 results per call, max 50) and cursor for the next page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to get TikTok data?

It sits in a legal grey area. TikTok's terms prohibit automated extraction without written approval, and the rules differ by country. Court cases have gone both ways for public data. Using a hosted API does not change the underlying questions. This page is not legal advice, talk to a lawyer before commercial use at scale.

Do I need approval from TikTok to use a managed API?

No. You sign up with the API provider, get one key, and call the endpoints. TikTok approval is only needed for TikTok's own official APIs.

How much data can I get for $29?

The Basic plan includes 10,000 calls a month. At 20 results per call, that is 200,000 videos, comments or search results, or 10,000 profile lookups. The 3-day free trial gives you 100 calls to test with first.

What should I build first?

Start with the profile endpoint: one call tells you who a creator is and how big they are. Then pull their videos, then search for your topic, then read the comments. That order answers most research questions in four calls.

Start the 3-day free trial: 100 calls on TikTok, card required, $29/mo after trial unless you cancel. Get your API key or try it in the Playground.

Prices checked on 2026-11-08. Instagram is next after X, then Reddit, all on the same single API key.
